Stories of struggle: the need to film

A programme proposed by Aflam in the framework of the 4th GIS MOMM congress

Rescuing stories from oblivion, resisting through cinema but also paying tribute to men and women in struggle, such is the attempt of each of the creations gathered for a second collaboration with GIS MOMM. Aflam offers, ten years after the Arab Springs, a set of documentaries on revolutionary figures from Iran, Syria and Turkey; a dive into Cairo through a short fiction; as well as a sound creation that gives voice to the filmmakers.

All three documentaries are directed by women, in the first person with HITCH: AN IRANIAN HISTORY and IN SEARCH OF THE MAN WITH THE CAMERA, or in portrait form in ANOTHER MOUNTAIN. Supported by archival footage and testimonies, these films denounce oppression, whether religious, nationalistic or patriarchal. As much a diary as an investigation, these stories take us to the edge of the genre: when the need to film exceeds the need to inform.
The short film J'AI PEUR D'OUBLIER TON VISAGE, all silence and movement, reveals a sensitive space, the distance between bodies and the impossible reunion of youth. Enfin, the sound creation Raconter des révoltes extends this cinematographic experience with Boutheyna Bouslema and other filmmakers from the region who express themselves on their artistic gesture.
