The making of a creative adventure

In 2019, Nawar Bulbul embarks on the adventure of "Equality", a text that he writes, directs and plays. As an artist associated with the Institute for Research and Studies on Arab and Muslim Worlds, he discovered the sound archives of Michel Seurat, a French sociologist who was kidnapped and died in captivity in Lebanon in 1985. Listening to these archives inspired him to create a new one-man show in which he once again denounces all forms of political, religious and social tyranny. In residence in different places, Nawar works on the smallest details of his new creation. Always in the same vein of a free and itinerant theater, accompanied by a minimalist set he focuses his attention on the fine construction of the characters he plays. Handling black humor with accuracy, he knows how to laugh at everything and even the worst.

In homage to Michel Seurat and all political prisoners around the world (researchers, thinkers, poets, journalists, artists ...), Nawar in this new creation takes us to the heart of the adventures of an asylum seeker unusual. The burlesque adventure of Omar Abu Michel, an inveterate cyclist, criss-crossing France as he imagined it for years, opens the door to all kinds of discussions between an idealized, even fantasized West and a bruised, forgotten, sometimes denounced or even denigrated East...

The play begins with a bizarre altercation between an agent of the prefecture and Omar Abu Michel. In the maze of administrative procedures with French institutions, Omar Abu Michel, like any other asylum seeker, confronts his dreams, fantasies and ideals with the institutional realities of France. Through a hypothetical dialogue and in the company of his beloved Égalité, Omar Abu Michel tells us about the life imposed according to the canons of society, the broken idyll, the family, social and political violence, the forced absence, the destitution and the ban in a world given over to dictatorial madness. This fiction denounces the omnipresence of injustice with a caustic humor, ingenuity and great sensitivity.
